MYSTERY 001: SOCKS, SECRETS & A LITTLE ART

Six people knew where to meet. They knew when to arrive. What they didn't know was what we had planned for them.

THEY CAME FOR A MYSTERY. THEY LEFT WITH... SOCK PUPPETS.

Mystery 001 began at Alden at Phoenix Art Museum, where six PHX Social Club members met for light snacks, drinks and some time to get to know one another. They knew where to show up and when—but not what would happen next.

Then it was time for the reveal. We headed into the museum, where the mystery turned out to involve gray socks, piles of colorful felt, yarn, scissors and an unreasonable number of googly eyes. We were making sock puppets. What initially sounded slightly ridiculous quickly became the kind of activity where everyone got far more invested than expected.

No two creations ended up remotely alike. There was multicolored hair, an impressive amount of facial hair, some questionable anatomy and a lot of laughing around the table as six plain gray socks developed six completely different personalities. More importantly, the activity gave everyone something to do while talking and getting to know one another—which is exactly what these small PHX experiences are supposed to accomplish.

ART IS OPEN TO INTERPRETATION.

After our puppets were finished, we spent some time exploring the museum. That's when we came across an installation filled with strange suspended figures assembled from toys and all sorts of unexpected objects.

And that's when someone noticed the blue dog bone.

Except they didn't think it was a dog bone.

For a brief moment, our sophisticated afternoon at the art museum became a discussion about whether we were actually looking at a sex toy (not going to say who thought what).

We weren't.

It was a dog toy. Or was it?

Apparently, contemporary art really is open to interpretation.
